Azim Premji University

Together with Azim Premji University (APU), we’re creating opportunities for advanced PHDs, leading academics and experts to focus on the urgent problems facing the world’s most populous democracy.

In India, the Institute and Azim Premji University are co-sponsoring a series of summer and winter schools for students in economics and related fields. The first event was an Advanced Graduate Workshop in Indian Development, which was held in July 2012. Given the enormous intellectual challenges and opportunities facing the world’s most populous democracy, building a new generation of scholars and practitioners who can contribute to rethinking and reshaping the public debate is an important step. To that end, the week-long workshop brought together an interdisciplinary group of scholars (at the advanced stages of their Ph.D. dissertations) from all over India to collaboratively engage in vital issues alongside leading academics and practitioners.

The first workshop focused on identifying the complex interactions that have influenced India’s trajectory of development and to conceive of development strategies that might be successful in promoting equitable growth, building workforce capabilities, and reducing poverty. The Institute is currently planning future workshops on similarly crucial topics.
