Herbert Gintis is external professor at the Santa Fe Institute and professor of economics at Central European University in Budapest, where he heads a multidisciplinary research project, “The Social and Mental Dynamics of Cooperation,” funded by the European Science Foundation. He was professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts from 1976 to 2002 and has been a visiting professor at the University of Siena, the University of Paris, and Harvard. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1969. Gintis is the author of numerous research papers in leading economic journals and books including Game Theory Evolving and The Bounds of Reason: Game Theory and the Unification of the Behavioral Sciences, and the coauthor of Schooling in Capitalist America; Foundations of Human Sociality; Moral Sentiments and Material Interests: On the Foundations of Cooperation in Economic Life; and the forthcoming A Cooperative Species: Human Reciprocity and Its Evolution.
