Antonio Weiss

Antonio Weiss is Counselor to the Secretary at the United States Department of the Treasury.  In that role, Mr. Weiss advises the Secretary on a broad range of domestic and international issues related to financial markets, regulatory reform, job creation, consumer finance, government lending practices, and broad-based economic growth. 

For example, Mr. Weiss helps manage the nation’s finances and coordinates the Department’s debt management policy with the Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee.  He advises the Secretary on the implementation of financial regulatory reform and policy issues related to financial stability, including the work of the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s review of potential threats arising from asset management products and activities.  He coordinates the Department’s housing finance policy efforts and its programs aimed at assisting struggling homeowners, which received additional funding in December 2015. Also, Mr. Weiss has led the effort to help Puerto Rico address its debt crisis and oversees Treasury’s review of online marketplace lending.    
 
Mr. Weiss is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.  He previously worked as global head of investment banking at Lazard, an independent financial advisory and asset management firm.  Prior to that, he held various leadership positions at the firm.  Before joining Treasury, Mr. Weiss was Publisher of literary quarterly The Paris Review, as well as a trustee of a number of nonprofit institutions.  He also participated in several public policy forums, and co-authored a 2012 Center for American Progress report that recommended a more progressive tax regime and a balanced approach to long-term debt reduction.  
 
Mr. Weiss earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale College and an M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar and Loeb Fellow.  He is married with three sons.
