Paul Bergin is a professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. He also is a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and an international research fellow with the Kiel Institute. Professor Bergin serves as associate editor of the Journal of International Economics and on the editorial board of Pacific Economic Review and Contemporary Economic Policy.

Motivated by the long-standing debate on the pros and cons of competitive devaluation, we propose a new perspective on how monetary and exchange rate policies can contribute to a country’s international competitiveness. We refocus the analysis on the implications of monetary stabilization for a country’s comparative advantage.
